Course Description:
The Low Vision Rehabilitation Division #7 of AER is sponsoring an online course addressing the current policy of Medicare and low vision rehabilitation. This course, Medicare Policy: Low Vision Rehabilitation – What Today’s Service Providers Should Know, is targeted for professionals working or considering working in the area of low vision. The course, which is available online 24/7, features a variety of disciplines and viewpoints from national leaders in the area of low vision rehabilitation.
Dr. Alan Morse, President of the Jewish Guild for the Blind, introduces the course addressing current Medicare policy and both new and proposed legislation; Paul Freeman, O.D., discusses coding and documentation of clinical low vision evaluation and management services; Lylas Mogk, M.D. discusses the rules for coding and documentation of rehabilitation services; and Susan Zekert, OT/L provides information for the occupational therapist functioning as an independent low vision rehabilitation service provider.
After taking this course participants will have a better understanding of current Medicare policy, procedures and reimbursement as it relates to low vision rehabilitation.

Students taking this course will gain an understanding of:

- The history of Medicare and low vision rehabilitation.
- Current service providers eligible for reimbursement of low vision rehabilitation through Medicare.
- Clinical low vision evaluation of Medicare coding and documentation by low vision specialists.
- The concept of “incident to” in providing low vision rehabilitation training and documentation as primary service provider.
- The role of a low vision specialist in the delivery of low vision rehabilitation care as a Medicare provider.
- Coding and documentation requirements of service providers, providing low vision rehabilitation training, and follow up in an “incident to” delivery model system.
- Role of occupational therapist in providing low vision rehabilitation training, coding and documentation.
- The changing demographics requiring low vision care and rehabilitation.
- Low vision rehabilitation that is currently reimbursed for evaluation and training through current Medicare policy.
- The legislative efforts that would have an impact upon Medicare and low vision rehabilitation reimbursement service providers.

Timeline:
Students will have three months to complete the course after enrollment.
Note: For an additional fee of $25 for AER members and $50 for non-AER members, students will be eligible to extend the period of course registration for an additional nine months to enable them to continue to participate in the course forum and to learn about the latest new developments in Medicare policy. Certification:
The Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) has approved this course for (3) hours of continuing education. Those wishing ACVREP credit will be required to complete a short evaluation as well as a self-test at the end of this course. The AER Central Office will mail a certificate for three (3) hours of ACVREP continuing education credit to those successfully completing the course test.
Course Test:
A self-test will be administered at the conclusion of the course. A score of 70% will be considered an acceptable passing grade.
