Dual Teacher for the Visually Impaired/ Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Job Description 

This position supports the overall mission of ABVI by providing instruction to families of infants/toddlers, students ages 3-22 and/or adults who are visually impaired or blind in order to improve educational and independent functioning. This position also provides on-going assessment of all developmental, visual and adaptive needs.

The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist provides instruction to students and/or adults who are visually impaired or blind in order to improve mobility and independent functioning. This position also provides on-going comprehensive assessments.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Provides direct instruction to meet the unique needs of students age 3-22 and adults who are visually impaired or blind in order to improve educational and/or independent functioning.
  • Travel regularly between assigned sites; must be able to reliably meet scheduling and transportation requirements to perform duties.
  • Consults with teachers, medical staff and other professionals to foster the success of client/ student.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments specific to low vision/blindness. Prepares written reports of findings.
  • Develops appropriate IEP (individualized education plan) or other treatment plans based on assessments.
  • Assesses developmental, visual and adaptive needs in the areas of cognition, literacy, social self-help and other areas specific to low vision and blindness vision/blindness. Provides assessment on an ongoing basis. Prepares reports of findings.
  • Documents services provided, travel records and specific data according to the guidelines set forth by ABVI.
  • Provides adaptation of materials including Braille transcription for daily needs
  • Maintain updated, district files within the Workspace in accordance to ABVI’s Record Management Policy.
  • Adheres to all billing, Medicaid and other O&M specific procedures according to each district’s needs. For instance, re-assessments of client’s O&M skills are conducted annually, used to develop IEP goals and reports are given to the IEP team and Medicaid billing specialist. Service notes and progress reports adhere to Medicaid requirements and provided in a timely to the district per the district’s guidelines.

Qualifications

Required Competencies- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of and experience in performing assessments appropriate for school-age children with visual impairments.
  • Has knowledge of expanded core curriculum.
  • Skilled in the use of braille and assistive technology with individuals with a visual impairment.
  • Skilled in conducting Functional Vision Assessments, Literacy Media and O&M Assessments.
  • Knowledgeable about child development.
  • Proficient in the evaluation/assessment and teaching of related skills needed by students who are blind.
  • Demonstrated computer skills: email, reporting, and documentation.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others to enhance the skill development of the child.

Licensures, Certifications

Certification in O&M from Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). SC teacher certification in teaching the visually impaired required. May also require NC teacher certification

Education

Bachelor's degree in human services or related field, early childhood education, elementary education, or special education from an accredited institution. Master's Degree preferred Experience At least two (2) years’ experience in teaching individuals who are blind/visually impaired.
