Are you an experienced in vision rehabilitation or Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructor ready for a rewarding career in public service? We are seeking a dedicated professional who is excited to help individuals with disabilities achieve greater independence and success. In this role, you will provide instructional services across a statewide coverage area to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Your responsibilities will include assessing and training clients in essential travel skills such as indoor and outdoor navigation, street crossing, and the use of public transportation, as well as guiding them in the effective use of adaptive equipment like long canes and support canes. Additionally, you will support clients in utilizing their residual vision (as appropriate), recommending sun lenses, and using distance low vision aids. You may also provide training in Activities of Daily Living, including kitchen tasks, communication, financial management, home management, personal management, and Braille. Assessment and training may take place in the participant's home, training site, or workplace. Therefore, significant in-state travel during work hours is required. The selected candidate must provide own transportation/driver or, in order to operate a state vehicle, must have a valid driver's license.

ADL / O&M Instructor Duties

  • Interviews participants verbally to assess their needs.
  • Conducts performance-based assessments to determine the level of participant functioning in specific areas.
  • Researches and recommends adaptive equipment and the level of training required to meet determined goals for independence and functioning.
  • Provides professional instructional services to participants who are blind or visually impaired, which may include assessment and training in O&M and/or ADL skills.
  • Monitors participant safety and progress when traveling in the home, community, and/or workplace.
  • Collaborates with internal agency staff as well as external providers such as job developers, job coaches, caregivers, and employers (as appropriate) to assist the participant in meeting their goals. A Successful ADL / O&M Instructor Has
  • Time management, case management, and prioritization skills. · An understanding of adult and youth learning styles.
  • Experience working effectively with individuals of varying backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to analyze and assess participant skills, training needs and limitations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use computer applications to produce timely, clear and readable reports.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team.

Classification: Instructional Service Provider

Qualifications

Completion of an undergraduate core program in business administration, education, social/human science (e.g., sociology, psychology, counseling, human development) AND 6 months of experience or training in delivery of the instructional service defined in the position description.

OR

Equivalent of education and/or experience per Minimum Class Qualifications noted above.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT:

For positions with an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) focus, incumbent must earn at least one of the following credentials within 12 months of hire:
  • Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT) from ACVREP
  • Occupational therapist with post-graduate certification in low vision
  • Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) as licensed by the Ohio Department of Education

For positions with an Orientation & Mobility (O&M) focus, incumbent must earn a Certified O&M Specialist credential from ACVREP within 12 months of hire.
