Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) or Dual COMS/Certified Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI)

Job Description 

The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired SC (ABVI) is seeking a COMS or Dual COMS/TVI to serve individuals throughout Cherokee County and the surrounding counties of Union, Chester, York, and Spartanburg. Preference is given to candidates residing within these counties, where services are delivered across communities within this regional service area. The position begins in July 2026.

This itinerant position will serve individuals by:
  • Providing instruction to school aged students and adults with low vision or blindness to support education, mobility, and independent functioning.
  • Assessing developmental, visual, and adaptive needs in areas such as cognition, literacy, social/self-help, and other skills related to low vision and blindness.
  • Developing appropriate treatment plans or IEPs based on assessments.
  • Delivering instruction in the client’s natural environment - home, school, or community settings.

Required Knowledge & Skills:
  • Experience conducting assessments for individuals with low vision and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Skill in teaching concept development, spatial orientation, independent travel, self-help, and related competencies.
  • Strong computer skills for email, reporting, and documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with families, schools, and community partners.

Qualifications

  • Experience conducting assessments for individuals with low vision and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Skill in teaching concept development, spatial orientation, independent travel, self-help, and related competencies.
  • Strong computer skills for email, reporting, and documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with families, schools, and community partners.
  • At least two (2) years of experience teaching individuals with blindness or low vision. Recent graduates will be considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, early childhood education, elementary education, special education, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • ACVREP certification in Orientation & Mobility required. Certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
