Barbara Shalit Memorial Scholarship
AER proudly offers the Barbara Shalit Memorial Scholarship to support students preparing for careers as Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TVIs). This scholarship honors the life and legacy of Barbara Ellen Shalit, whose distinguished career at the New Jersey Commission for the Blind was marked by her unwavering commitment to students who are blind or have low vision.
Barbara was known for her empathy, creativity, and high expectations. She not only transformed the lives of her students but also mentored and inspired future educators in the field. Her work reflected a deep belief that every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and fully participate in their community.
In her honor, AER awards one $1,000 scholarship annually to a student currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program preparing to become a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments.
Through this scholarship, Barbara’s legacy continues by supporting the next generation of professionals who share her dedication to excellence, access, and opportunity.
AER welcomes those who wish to honor these legacies by investing in the continued growth and long-term sustainability of these scholarship funds.
