Douglas C. MacFarland Travel Stipend

Douglas C. MacFarland Travel Stipend

The Douglas C. MacFarland Travel Stipend was established to promote professional development among AER members by supporting attendance at the AER International Conference. Named in honor of Douglas MacFarland, this fund reflects AER’s commitment to strengthening the field through continued learning, engagement, and connection.

Originally designated by the AER Board of Directors to advance professional development, the fund was expanded in 1995 to include travel stipends for conference participation. Since that time, the MacFarland Stipend has served as an important pathway for members to access the AER International Conference, with a particular emphasis on first-time attendees.

For the 2026 AER International Conference, AER will award three $1,000 travel stipends to support members in attending the conference.

In addition to the stipend:

  • AER will cover conference registration and hotel accommodations for selected recipients
  • The stipend will be provided as a reimbursement for travel-related expenses, including airfare and per diem

Selection will be based on:

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Commitment to the field of blindness and low vision
  • Potential impact of conference participation
  • Preference for first-time conference attendees

Recipients will be expected to demonstrate the impact of their participation by completing a post-conference learning report, which may be shared through The Voice or an AER blog.

Through the MacFarland Travel Stipend, AER continues its investment in professional growth, leadership development, and the long-term sustainability of the field.

AER welcomes those who wish to honor this legacy by investing in the continued growth and long-term sustainability of this fund.
