William and Dorothy Ferrell Memorial Scholarship
AER proudly offers the William and Dorothy Ferrell Memorial Scholarship to support individuals who are legally blind and pursuing careers in the education or rehabilitation of persons who are blind or visually impaired.
Established in 1981 by William and Dorothy Ferrell of Merritt Island, Florida, the scholarship reflects their commitment to expanding opportunities for individuals who are blind to enter professional roles within the field. Their initial contribution launched the fund, and in 1984, the AER Board of Directors reinforced that commitment through additional support and member contributions. The first scholarships were awarded at the 1986 AER International Conference.
The Ferrells believed in collective investment in the future of the profession and encouraged AER members to contribute to the fund, creating a tradition that continues today.
Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually to qualified applicants who are legally blind and enrolled in postsecondary programs preparing for careers serving individuals who are blind or have low vision.
The Ferrell Scholarship remains a cornerstone of AER’s commitment to supporting professionals with lived experience in the field.
AER welcomes those who wish to honor these legacies by investing in the continued growth and long-term sustainability of these scholarship funds.
