Global Survey on Braille: Literacy, Access, and Innovation
This research seeks to gather information about global trends in braille literacy, access to braille, and familiarity / usage of tools and technologies that support braille. Your participation in this research is completely voluntary but if you choose to participate, the study should take approximately 15-25 minutes for each survey you choose to complete. You will be asked to respond to a series of questions regarding your experiences with braille and depending on your role, this may include questions about when braille was learned, access to materials and technology, instructional practices, and perceptions of braille’s usefulness. There are no anticipated risks to taking part in this research study beyond those which you might experience during the normal course of your daily activities and there are no anticipated direct benefits to you from taking part in this study. However, your participation may help contribute to a better understanding of braille literacy and access globally.
Who can participate?
The Global Braille Survey welcomes responses from:
- Adults aged 18 and over who are blind, have low vision, or are deafblind;
- Parents and guardians of children of any age who are blind, have low vision, or are deafblind;
- Teachers and other professionals involved in braille education, including retired professionals who have taught braille; and
- Braille transcribers.

The survey is currently available in Arabic, Czech, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Nepali Unicode, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak and Spanish.
For individuals who have difficulty accessing or completing the online survey because of poor internet connectivity, alternative arrangements are available. Please contact [email protected] or [email protected].
