Neurological Visual Impairment Interest Group
Statement of Purpose
The AER Neurological Visual Impairment Interest Group is a collaborative community of practitioners committed to promoting the independence, access, and lifelong participation of individuals of all ages with the spectrum of variations of neurological visual impairments (NVI) including Cerebral and/or Cortical Visual Impairment. Recognizing that alterations to vision due to conditions affecting the brain can occur at any point across the lifespan, we strive to develop, refine, and promote effective, evidence-informed strategies that address the unique and evolving needs of this population. Our mission centers on advancing practice that is responsive, inclusive, and grounded in an understanding of the complex relationship between vision, the brain, and functional outcomes.
Statement of Goals and Objectives
As the field of NVI continues to evolve, we acknowledge both the challenges and opportunities created by emerging research, clinical advances, and educational practice. We are dedicated to expanding professional knowledge, questioning traditional definitions, and engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure individuals are appropriately identified and served. Through shared learning, dialogue, and partnership across education, medical, rehabilitation, and habilitation systems, we work to ensure services are driven by functional need, educational impact, and family priorities rather than by outdated categories or isolated disciplines.
We further commit to building professional capacity by fostering a vibrant network for collaboration, mentorship, research dissemination, and innovation. By supporting ongoing professional learning, field-based research, and the translation of knowledge into practice, we seek to propel the field into its next phase of understanding and application. In doing so, we aim to improve outcomes for individuals with all forms of NVI, strengthen support for families, and advance equitable, coordinated services that reflect the growing understanding of vision and the brain.
