Welcome to the AER
Division On Aging
About
Our members are dedicated individuals of diverse backgrounds, with a broad matrix of knowledge, skills, abilities, and strong interests in aging and vision loss.
BENEFITS
Division membership provides an opportunity to join other members in education and advocacy efforts on behalf of older individuals who are blind and are challenging aging in our society. We achieve this through connecting our members through our email listserv and Watercooler Discussions. The listserv allows us to quickly share and seek information and discuss important topics.
Initiated in 2015, our division holds monthly telephone conference calls called Watercooler Discussions. Generally held the third Wednesday of every month at 1 PM Eastern, these discussions cover a variety of topics from technology, health, community resources and advocacy. In 2019 we plan on having one session provide CEUs for ACVREP on Parkinson’s Disease. Visit our Past Watercoolers page for links to recordings of previous discussions.
We hope that they are of some benefit to you and that you will consider membership in our division. For more information, you can contact any of our board members from the Leadership page.
Aging and Vision Loss National Coalition (AVLNC) Service Provider Toolkit
The Aging and Vision Loss National Coalition (AVLNC) Service Provider Toolkit helps professionals recognize and address the wide-ranging impacts of vision loss when serving older adults. Designed for use across healthcare, rehabilitation, residential services, discharge planning, mental health, recreation, legal, financial, and other support settings, it promotes best practices for assessing individual needs, abilities, and goals. By incorporating vision loss accommodations into personalized service and treatment plans, providers can improve outcomes and support a higher quality of life. With vision impairment remaining a leading cause of disability in the United States and the number of older adults experiencing blindness expected to grow significantly by 2050, this resource offers practical guidance for meeting an increasingly critical need.
